I have orthodontics on my upper teeth. My orthodontist suggested that two of my upper teeth (4,4) should be removed. But, he extracted tooth no.3 from one side and no.4 from the other side. I was very concerned and in my next appointment asked him why he extracted tooth no.3? Was it a mistake? He said either I didn’t have tooth no.3 from birth or it’s been removed before. I’m very concerned. I look forward to your response. Thanks a lot.
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
In treatments, especially the ones associated with tooth extraction, the orthodontist usually applies braces on both jaws, and if there is a tooth missing at one side (for example, a canine is missing), either from birth or it’s been removed before, no tooth will be extracted from that side, and only from the other side.
Thanks for your contact. In your case, it takes about one and a half years.

I’m 22 and I want to have orthodontics on my upper teeth. I had root canal on all my teeth and they are all filled, except for my wisdom tooth and two of my lower teeth. Do I need to repair all my lower teeth before the molding? Is it urgent o have a root canal on my wisdom tooth, or can I do it after the molding and before placing the braces? Thank you.
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
If you’re having orthodontics just for the upper jaw, the lower teeth can be repaired during orthodontics. There is no need to repair the wisdom tooth and it’s usually extracted if the orthodontist sees fit.

Thanks for your commendable commitment and response. What kind of images should I send you for a more thorough consultation? And is it possible for a patient who is already in treatment with another doctor to visit a new orthodontist? Because my own doctor is on trip right now and I feel my teeth are being severely squished together and have no place to move. I again appreciate your kindness.
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Please send x-rays of your mouth’s interior from different angles. Regretfully, we don’t accept consultation during an ongoing orthodontic treatment.

My orthodontic treatment is completed and my doctor has now placed braces at the back of my teeth. I want to know how long should the braces and wires remain in my mouth?
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Usually, depending on your orthodontist’s opinion, it will remain inside the mouth from one year to 10 years.

Yesterday, I started my orthodontic treatment. Till today, whatever I eat, even soft bread, my upper teeth hurt. They also hurt when I press them together. My orthodontist didn’t tell me anything about the pain and I haven’t found any useful information on Internet. I appreciate your help.
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Usually, you’ll be in pain the first four days after the Orthodontics are placed. To ease the pain you can have acetaminophen.

I’m 32 years old. It’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve started orthodontics. My upper jaw has become protruded and because of it my treatment has taken so long. But I have no idea why my jaw has moved forward! And I fear removing the braces. Please help me. Thanks.
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Usually, the teeth move forward with fixed orthodontic treatment, and the orthodontist has to extract tooth to pull them back.

I have ceramic orthodontics on my both jaws. The lower jaw braces were placed yesterday. Today, I realized that the brace on my big wisdom tooth has become loose. It’s not broken and is in place, but when I play a little with it, it wiggles up and down. My doctor is in office only on Mondays and the next Monday is a holiday. In your opinion, should I visit a doctor immediately? How can I prevent the brace to get looser till I get to visit a doctor?
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Don’t worry. This is common. Usually, because the patient can’t completely follow the diet after the first appointment, the braces may break or fall off the teeth. If it’s not bothering you, wait till your next appointment with your own doctor.

I have two questions. First, since my teeth are tiny, do fixed braces come in small and big sizes? Moreover, I have a deep bite and also crooked teeth. How long does treatment take for a deep bite? And is it possible to use Damon braces?
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Braces come in different sizes, both small and big. Usually, the orthodontics takes 14 to 18 months. Also, you can use Damon braces.

I’m 21 and I don’t have the time to have orthodontics right now. Can I have orthodontics and get straight teeth when I’m 22? And will I face any problems?
Dr. Hadi Darvishpour :
Yes, you can have orthodontics. In general, provided that the gums and teeth are healthy and you have a good oral hygiene, there would be no age limit for orthodontics.
